Here in is just some music I found that I liked or was interesting while I have been sitting out my quarantine. This will meander a bit. I have a lot of listening to catch up on but these are items of interest to me – and maybe to you.
I’m pleased to report that LeftyFish has had a couple of releases since I last wrote about them. Soooooo goooood. Gotta like noise though.
The Ice Age
Let’s start with the interesting. This is a long lost record from Indianapolis’ psych/hard rock band Ice (aka Zukus). Not bad. More interesting than good perhaps. Certainly good enough to have released i’d think
This is interesting. This is some Turkish Psych from 1969. Pretty nice.
Bandcamp Essential Releases
If you don’t follow, it’s worth checking out Bandcamp’s Essential Releases. They do this post weekly and there is typically good stuff of various musical styles.
My initial favorite from the week of March 6 was this punk from Bogotá, Colombia (via Discos MMM in Berkeley):
Also check out this album from P.E. (via Wharfcat Records) which features members of Brooklyn’s Pill. Actually i’m wavering on this. Listening to P.E. as I write this and it’s so good. For a preference, do I go by the number of characters in the band name? OK i’ve fully wavered over to P.E. Listen to the whole album. It is soooo good.
Writing about music is dangerous to our finances. With each listen, comes another urge to buy something great. Fortunately the March 13 Essentials wasn’t as appealing.
Really liked this rap album from non-binary Sudanese artist Dua Saleh though:
I ventured to many corners of the internet, but I hung around the Discos MMM bandcamp space for a bit and this is really, really good:
Slum of Legs
I already knew I liked Slum of Legs. They have a new LP out as of 3/13. Give it a listen:
I’m really enjoying the free jazz from Irreversible Entanglements. They have a new album coming out and here are a couple of samplings of their music.
They also released this marvelous 23 minute song. In the style of Sun Ra without the Saturn part.
You can pick up their new album here via International Anthem Recording Co. (set to ship on 3/20/2020).
If you dig that and maybe want to dig deeper into the International Anthem catalog, I might suggest this album from Junius Paul. Baker’s Dozen is spectacular.
Eventually I end up back in my indie rock roots. This is technically a re-release with a couple of additional songs. Love the emotive, poppy indie hapenning here.
Melkbelly is another band, this time noise rock band, I already really like and they have a new album coming out on April 2nd. Check it out:
If you are looking for mostly instrumental post-rock, this Unconditional Arms record should do the trick:
This isn’t new, but it’s some solid psych rock from L.A. Witch
Drunk Radio Shower – Turkey
There will be more, but I thought i’d finish with a couple songs leftover from our last Drunk Radio Shower. This is where we get together and listen to music from a country (or other theme) and usually blog about it. Anyhow, we went in for the deep dive on Turkey. We didn’t live blog as per usual but here are a couple of things I liked.
Jenny & Her Guitar
Some Istanbul punk for ya via Kafadam Kontak Records. I’ll have to take a deeper dive on this label sometime soon.
This is from the Swiss band Arkadaş via a London label Arsivplak. I don’t think we played since it wasn’t technically from Turkey but it’s solid experimental funk/jazz.
Destroy Earth brings some bass heavy stoner prog rock. Instrumental of course. It’s good stuff.
And that’s all for today. More music to quarantine by probably in a week or so. Thanks for reading/listening!
