Live

Simpson caps off his absurdly successful year by taking his cover of When in Rome’s “The Promise” to Late Night.
Well here’s a nice surprise. The Velvet Underground are reissuing their S/T debut, and including a 1969 live performance from San Francisco’s The Matrix club. And while the performance has been floating around for years, the recording has been super cleaned up. This is one of the best sounding live VU sets I’ve ever heard.

From the Hysterics last show.  It’s super sad to see them go.  The sound isn’t great on this, but it’s the fuckin Hysterics!

Here is an older live video with better sound.  For proper Hysterics flavor.

Today, I’d like to call your attention to the consistently wonderful Aquarium Drunkard blog, where they just posted a pair of covers by Benjamin Booker. While his take on Furry Lewis’s “Falling Down Blues” is very well done, it’s the latter of the two tracks, a live take on the Otis Redding and the Pinetoppers’ classic, that’s had me hitting play repeatedly for the past few days.

Both songs can be found here, and if either catch your ear, you’d also be well served to take a listen to AD’s recently posted fall mixtape, which is right here. Really, just make a mental note to check the site daily, as very few days go by without a quality post or two.

Jim posted about Crush Songs, a collection of lo-fi solo songs from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ frontwoman, a week or so ago. While I find the effort to be a bit hit-or-miss (not necessarily a surprise, considering it’s basically a batch of demos), this live performance of album highlight “Rapt” is a great reminder that Karen has never suffered from a lack of showmanship, even while playing to an audience hand-picked by some company’s marketing department. Seriously, the people in this video would make an IKEA showroom look like Compton by comparison.
