Today’s Random Album of the Day is A Tribute To from Yim Yames. This is an EP. This is indie folk, maybe alt-country. It can also be labeled as singer songwriter.

This is a tribute album from the singer of My Morning Jacket and features 6 George Harrison covers. To me, it’s just lacking the vibrancy one would expect from George Harrison covers. Probably the only cover that was on par was “My Sweet Lord.”

Rating: 5.0

Favorite Track(s): My Sweet Lord

Keep or Trash: Trash. I like the concept but this album doesn’t work for me. But Jen likes My Sweet Lord so I think we’ll keep that one song.

Today’s Random Album of the Day is Calling the New Gods from Indonesian Experimental artists Senyawa. I like Senyawa but I haven’t listened in a while. So this is a vert nice surprise.

This is so good. It’s experimental music so it does require you have a taste for that. But it’s very good. But there aren’t melodies. There are rhythms. You get what you get. This is artsy music at its core.

Rating: 9.5

Favorite Track(s): Kereta Tak Berhenti

Keep or Trash: Keep. As noted above I like Senyawa so definitely keep.

We’re currently doing a music league using the Band Jam App and our theme for this past round was Song for a Rainy Day. I found so many songs about rain when looking into this, so I decided randomly to do a top 50 list. See below for links to the #50 to 31 songs. You can listen below for the #30 to 21 songs.

I’ve included the list below the fold in a text format with streaming links. In case you’d rather do that…

Happy Pride! Today’s Random Album of the Day happens to be from a queer artist. Today’s album is Do Not Disturb from Young Miko. Young Miko is a pop rap artist from Puerto Rico.

This album is really good. I don’t know much about this style of music, but it grooves, flows, and makes you want to dance. They probably overuse the vocal effects but that’s normal these days. All in all, it is a very enjoyable album and it fit my mood well today.

Rating: 9.0. This may not be my normal wheelhouse but it’s very good at what it does.

Favorite Track(s): Ni Le Cabe

Keep or Trash: Keep. Even if I didn’t like it my wife loves it so it’s a definite keeper.

Welcome to the Radio Shower Weekly Highlight Podcast with Jayne. Issue #3. Leave your comments below…

Today’s Random Album of the Day is The Icicles with Arrivals & Departures. Today is pure unadulterated twee pop. Very uplifting and at times bitter sweet. Pretty vocals with jangly music.

This album exudes a certain atmosphere. Even when it’s darker in content lyrically, it’s jangly and bright. But in a way that works. It’s very nice Sunday music actually. It fit so well this morning.

Rating: 8.8. It’s hard to rate this super high for some reason, but I absolutely adore this album. It really meshes with the girl in me.

Favorite Track(s): La Ti Da. I just love how uplifting this song sounds.

Keep or Trash: Keep. I haven’t trashed anything in a while but I really love this album so no chance I’m gonna trash it.

Today’s Random Album of the Day is Quarterboy from Quarterbacks. This is some very twee music. Bedroom caliber twee. I quite enjoy it of course.

Is that a Striped Maple leaf on his head? It looks like it. Striped Maple we always called the toilet paper tree because it was quite useful when you needed that.

In any case, this is very bare bones, emo-esque twee. Lovely little songs that are short and enjoyable. Melodic music with just vocals and acoustic guitar.

Rating: 8.5

Favorite Track(s): Words and Smiles (Tiger Trap Cover)

Keep or Trash: Keep. It seems like I’m keeping almost everything. But I do like my bedroom twee shit. And spoiler: one of their songs may have made the top 50 rain songs list. Just saying….

Today’s Random Album of the Day is a Daytrotter session from Mountain Man – a trio from Vermont who I think is now in North Carolina? I’m not totally sure. I just had come across this trio in a music league round and I liked what I heard. I had forgotten I had the Daytrotter session in my collection. Funny when you discover something you’ve already “discovered”.

Honestly, I know I like some of their music but this particular Daytrotter Session didn’t blow me away on the first listen. I turned it up a bit and re-listened and that helped. Sometimes music benefits from some volume so you can fully experience it. Though this is not the style of music they had in mind when they said to turn it up to 11.

So yeah what is this? It’s folk music basically. Rate Your Music calls it “Contemporary Folk” which ok. It’s pretty and chill. They do good music, though this was early content for them and I think based on what I’ve heard their later stuff might be better. I sound Luke-warm and I guess I am. I thought I’d like this more than I did and expectations might have hurt my reception of it. But it is good folk music so give it a listen yourself. You may like it a bunch if that’s your thing.

Rating: 8.0

Favorite Track(s): Mouthwings

Keep or Trash: Keep. I’ve been wanting to listen to more of their stuff so I think I’ll do that.

This Daytrotter Session is from 2010 which is when they released their album Made the Harbor.

Today’s Random Album of the Day is Book Lungs from Hello Shark. Wow, what a contrast with yesterday! I guess this also has a slow tempo. It’s classified as Indie Folk / Slowcore.

I became enamored with the simple sounds from Hello Shark via one of their Christmas songs which was on a compilation I had. Of course, that’s the benefit of compilations – helping to find bands you like!

This album really appeals to the hippie part of me: The environmentalist and solo backpacker. The one who would venture off a trail or crash on a floor. The one who took my dog backpacking. While also feeling entirely comfortable with the indie rocker in me. I do want to note that they sound like they are having such fun making this album.

Gratuitous photo of my old dog backpacking…

Rating: 8.9

Favorite Track(s): “I Love Vermont” reminds me of my youth of sharing spaces and traveling places. “Ruth the Bug” similarly gives me a nostalgic vibe. “This is a Mess” feels just perfectly comfortable. But “When the Rain Comes” is just so lovely. I could listen to this song all day.

Keep or Trash: Keep. I don’t listen to them enough but definitely a keep.

The album is embedded below but it’s not available to buy there. If you are interested in any of their content, check out their Bandcamp here. But Book Lungs is not on it.

Today’s Random Album of the Day is Dead Eyes from Khünnt. They are a sludge noise band from the UK. I really like sludge noise, though it’s not good for casual listening per se.

This is pretty good sludge noise. The music is heavy with a slow tempo as sludge noise tends to be. It might have appeal to noisy metal fans in addition to noise fans. This style of music is an acquired taste for sure. And it’s kind of best live in some respects.

However, it is not entirely compatible with my illness it seems. I can be sensitive to certain noises, though my sensitivity can vary from day to day. This did trigger some mild symptoms so I only gave it a single listen and moved on.

I think when it comes to noise I do prefer slightly catchier riffs and shorter songs than this. These are long sings. But this is good, so I don’t want to confuse that preference with an assessment of the quality of the music.

Rating: 7.5

Favorite Song: Rhoijse Nojyk

Keep or Trash: Keep. I considered not keeping due to the illness compatibility issue but my sensitivity may improve at some point. When I saw a noise band came up with material I didn’t have I thought I might opt to buy more, but this isn’t music I expect to play a lot of. So I’ll keep this and go from there.
