I know Toronto is supposed to be the NYC of Canada, so maybe I shouldn’t be surprised to hear New Fries’ dancefloor-ready no-wave thumper “Plexiglass”.

I’m sure to be sleeping after another late radio show. So, posting this one early. I don’t think i’ve ever watched an Of Montreal video before. I’ve always had some appreciation for their emphasis on visual arts. But seeing them live put me over the edge. Such a brilliant visual performance. So, of course, a new video from Of Montreal caught my attention. And here it is…

Hey! I’m back on a normal schedule, so hopefully that means back to regularly scheduled blog posts. Let’s start with the live take on “Ha Ha Ha” by The Julie Ruin. And if you like this, make sure you tune into the radio show tonight, 9PM til midnight, streaming at www.wrct.org.
Welcome to another edition of the Interstellar Radio Shower Week in Review. Here in we pick the favorite song posted by the other (ie. Jim picks his favorite Matt song, and Matt his favorite Jim song) and we say why it’s our fav. Also, quick summaries of our other long posts for the week. Basically, herein we navel gaze.

Jim Picks a Matt Song

Another good mix from Matt this week. I really like Woodsman but my favorite selection came down to Ghetto Ghouls or Dilly Dally. We’ll say Dilly Dally because it’s really quite epic.

Matt Picks a Jim Song

Woo boy, things sure did get loud there towards the middle of the week, didn’t they? Jim’s one-two punch of Foot Hair and The Beverley’s really struck a chord with me, but I’ll give the nod to the former based solely on terrible/awesome band name recognition.

7″ Highlight – Chorusgirl

This week’s 7″ highlight focused on indie pop done the right way with Chorusgirl via Odd Box Records. Read the full review here or listen below.

LP Highlight – Deaf Wish’s Pain

Tons of great records are coming out this month. Deaf Wish’s Pain LP is definitely one of the highlights. You can check out our full post on this record or listen below.

International Radio Shower – Greece Edition Part II (εἰρκτή compilation)

This week’s episode of International Radio Shower features a compilation from Greek record label εἰρκτή. Check out the post for the full details. You can listen to the first part of the compilation below as well.

Sunday,  August 2nd Radio Show Playlist

Matt was traveling so you can blame Jim for what transpired. This week’s show featured some weirdness from Indonesian avant-garde act Senyawa, some rock’n roll goodness from Ex Hex, and the poppy shoegaze of Westkust. Check out the full playlist in our post here. You can also check out any of our playlists anytime on the WRCT website.

I’m a big math rock fan as evidenced by many of my posts (such as yesterday’s Self-Evident post). And it’s not fathers day but it feels like it could be after listening to this. And this song is called Bestest Dad. And it’s awesome. Happy special August Father’s Day to my old man who has been nothing but good to me my whole life. Put up with my weird tendencies and shenanigans.

Each month, in the International Radio Shower, we will explore interesting (to us) music from around the world. This feature publishes every Friday. This is Part II in our series on Greece. To read Part I click here.

The εἰρκτή compilation

Now this is something very different from my last post on nefeli walking undercover. And the timing is right. The small Greece label εἰρκτή is releasing a compilation of largely previously unreleased material that is quite extensive. It features primarily artists from the 80s and features 3 full length LPs and 1 7″ of material covering a wide array of the Greek underground scene. The recordings are sometimes pretty raw, but the content is great. Below I highlight some of my favorites from each lp.

βιῶν ἐν εἰρκτῇ (eirme 04 . 1)

Side A features primarily post punk content. Every song is solid. My favorite might be the fifth song from stranded particles y-r, but I think this track from on purpose might have the most appeal. Check it out.

Side B focuses on punk artists from the Greek underground scene. I really liked this track from ήταν είναι και θα είναι. It has spunk.

More after the fold…

βιῶν ἐν εἰρκτῇ (eirme 04 . 2)

On the second lp, the C side focuses on the minimal synth scene. This side really kicks it off well with this track from χωρίς περιδέραιο.

And on the D side, which focuses more on dark wave electronic and experimental. Hang with this track from common sense.

βιῶν ἐν εἰρκτῇ (eirme 04 . 3)

This entire album continues to focus on dark wave material. This might be my favorite song on the comp. Reminds me of something Chris Knox would do and even gets a bit weirder.

The F side gets a bit more ambient and experimental. I really liked this track from κρυπτογράφημα.

βιῶν ἐν εἰρκτῇ (eirme 04.4)

Finally we get to the New Wave 7″. The A-side from film noir is a lovely poppy new wave ditty. It’s so 1980s.

And that’s all for this week. As you can see that’s quite a sampler. It’s available digitally from the bandcamp links, or you can buy the box set on vinyl directly from the label here.

Note: A lot of the info is in Greek so if I got anything grossly wrong let me know.

Coming Next Week: Part III on Grecian post rock.
