Swoon.
Swoon.
I watched “The Punk Singer” over the weekend (you should do the same), and thus have spent the last few days reacquainting myself with Miss Hanna’s artistic output. I can’t play this one on the radio, so it made sense to throw it up as my song of the day instead.
From last year’s Sonic Bloom, which is still getting heavy play on my iPod. The entire second half of the album crushes, but it all comes to a head on closer “The New World”. Best experienced live, if you get the chance.
People tend to lump Codeine in with the slowcore movement, but I always thought they came off a lot more sinister than Low and their ilk. Exhibit A is “Cigarette Machine” off of Frigid Stars, which wouldn’t sound out of place on Spiderland or some of the other stuff coming out of Louisville at the time.
Here’s some Sunday afternoon interstellar radio gospel for you.
Taken from the duo’s (?) upcoming LP Complete Surrender, due out in a few weeks. RIYL cinematic chamber pop a la Camera Obscura.
Had to hurry up and post this before Jim did, cause I know he’s way into this album, too. You can definitely hear a DC lineage in the music, and the vocals remind me of Nick Cave at his Birthday Party-est/most unhinged. If you like this song, you’ll definitely dig the rest of their new EP, out now on Don Giovanni records.
Had to fit this in somewhere. Let’s call it a bonus for the Holiday. This song and video from Hospitality are just great.
