Song of the Day

I was looking at a list of lesser known bands playing Riot Fest Chicago.  I like several but this is probably the only one on the list that really stuck out to me.  I also seem to have lost the list or i’d link it.  Sorry whomever wrote that article.  I’m sure you are wonderful and deserve the link.

Oh, and hey look, this was just in my twitter feed this morning,  A new song from Pity Sex.  I can’t seem to get an embeddable version of that.

Sometimes, with music, I end up going down the rabbit hole.  The other day I posted a track from a new 7″ by Quemada Records.  I decided to pick up the 7″ and placed an order with them.  Via that order I found this 7″ from another label.  Another fantastic song.  And creepy as hell video.  Fantastic stuff. I don’t know where that footage is from but i’m now curious.

It’s good spacey indie rock with a strong 80s/Joy Division influence. While maybe not breaking new ground, this Austin 3-piece has put together a good album that’s consistent and draws you in. So consistent that I initially missed the transition from “Both Eyes” into “Lied”. The pause wasn’t enough apparently. But it’s half way through Lied where this album get’s more interesting. “You’re Fake” is the best song but this one is pretty good as well.

For what it’s worth, I also found this which is pretty great.  Off of a compilation.

Wow, this might be the best new thing I’ve heard in a while.  It’s off a new 7 inch from Quemada Records.  First of, great name for that label that i’ve never heard of before.  Read this great review here.  Then go buy the record.

Some twee emo indie rock here. Is that a genre? Genres are just made up anyhow right? Anyhow, I recently discovered Empire! Empire! so seeing them in the new CDs at WRCT seemed apropo.  I like them, though I think their new album “You will eventually be forgotten” isn’t their best effort.

The album is basically what you’d expect. Built to spill inspired twee indie rock. Most songs get a bit pop punk at points. That’s why track 4 didn’t appeal to me as much, but if pop punk is your thing, maybe check that one out. Overall, the vocals tend to meander a bit like a Death Cab song. While not their best effort, there are several worthwhile songs if you appreciate the sound. Like some bands that tend to get a bit poppy, the “b-side” material at the end of the cd is a bit less poppy.

They are pretty good song titlers under the worst circumstances.  Something from a previous release, just because.
