I really like this band Eux Autres I’ve recently discovered. They have this nice indie pop thing going. It’s somewhat reminiscent of Dressy Bessy for me.

Matt held down the reigns last night while I was returning from camping. Can’t beat the Nation of Ulysses, Destruction Unit, and Cursive. Hope yinz enjoyed the show. We’ll be back next Sunday with a special guest to boot.

I highlighted the new LP from Conspiración Autista a couple of weeks back. But it’s always nice to see a band in it’s natural habitat. Radio show tonight. 9pm. I am out of town for personal reasons but Matt will be carrying the torch.

Welcome to another edition of the Interstellar Radio Shower Week in Review. Here in we pick the favorite song posted by the other (ie. Jim picks his favorite Matt song, and Matt his favorite Jim song) and we say why it’s our fav. Also, quick summaries of our other long posts for the week. Basically, herein we navel gaze.

Matt Picks a Jim Song

All due respect to the rest of Jim’s songs this week, but the Disco Doom song that went up is absolutely wonderful.

If you’d prefer to do some navel-gazing instead, I’d recommend the Old Smokey post, which probably would’ve taken my top spot on a good majority of weeks.

Jim Picks a Matt Song

You can’t miss with Ezra Furman. I really liked New Fries. But who can argue with a pink shiny ultrablast? This song is quite large in substance. Really love the shoegazy aspects of it.

7″ Highlight – Moon By You

Some K-Records style psychadelic Doo-wop. It works. Read our post on the single here or listen below.

EP Highlight – Shady Hawkins

A bit of a classic rock touch, a bit of a punk touch, a band from Brooklyn. That about describes it. Check out the full post here or listen below.

LP Highlight – Town Portal

Some styling instrumental math rock from Copenhagen. Don’t be discouraged. This is really, really good. Read the full post here or listen below.

Sunday,  August 2nd Radio Show Playlist

The show featured some new White Reaper, two bands named Slouch, and a classic from the Cure. Check out the full playlist here. And remember, you can always check out our playlists at WRCT’s website as well.

Each month, in the International Radio Shower, we will explore interesting (to us) music from around the world. This feature publishes every Friday. This month will focus on music in Greece. Click on the following links to read Part I: Nefeli Walking Undercover and Part II: εἰρκτή compilation.

In my limited sample of music I combed through, I found a large amount of post rock, much of which could be classified as math rock. I tend to like this genre of music, so I found a lot of interest to me. Here are a couple highlights.

Afformance

First of all, I appreciate a good band name. Afformance works for me. It is a made up word with meaning behind it. And let’s face it, virtually all math rock is quite a bit emo and a touch intelligentsia. This actually has some similarities to Pittsburgh’s own My Captain, My Sea.

More after the fold…

Hope Thinks Infinite

Well, this band’s label is so very literal. They deliver a great brand of instrumental post-rock. Thousand Yard Stare is a phenomenal song. And Glacial Erratic is a great song title. Petrichor goes primarily ambient or something.

We Own the Sky

Again, literal in a name. This one a little more aggressive about it. And a lot more heavy metal influenced. I recommend Alterecho.

Coming Next Week: Part IV on Grecian stoner rock.

Some great music from London-side.

This week’s highlighted album comes from the Copenhagen trio Town Portal. While perusing random Danish music I came upon this band. Their new record “The Occident” was released just this May and is fantastic. This is really excellent math rock that reminds me of Polvo except in that it’s entirely instrumental. The only thing that could make this album better, in fact, would be some Polvo-esque vocals.

Bonus Trigger starts out the lp with some styling guitars. Reminds me a bit of the snazzy guitar licks Grass is Green might deploy (in more extensive proportions though perhaps). Eschaton slows things down initially. But this song has excellent rhythmic starts and stops, ups and downs, and moments of reflection. Deep Error is basically an awesome short bridge. Heavy, simple, and teasing.

K. was the first song that caught my attention on my first listen. It’s a great song and I played it on the radio show already. Again, this song strongly recalls Polvo for me. I’m not saying Town Portal is a Polvo clone, only in that they have tapped into a similar styling that really works. And it’s their own, so don’t be confused by that.

Yes Golem, however, might be my favorite track on the album. It’s hard, grating, and cascading. Then it will suddenly slow down and reset at just the right moments. The title inspires some kind of mythic darkness and adventure and the song does not disappoint on that front.

Dream Bureau falls on the quiet but lovely end of things. I appreciate that Town Portal is completely comfortable going from the heavy and aggressive to the more serene. Moon Treaty continues this trend before Town Portal cashes in with the tantalizing World Core and Peripheral Islands. Which is a completely epic song title. And the song is quite epic on it’s own. And randomly at some point in the tune there is some random June of 44 talk over for about 10 seconds. That was seriously tantalizing. I think more of that could be really effective with their style. But they don’t need it either. And on second listen I didn’t notice it so maybe I completely imagined that.

If you want to know more about the band, check out this interview via bandwagon. Otherwise, listen below. You can buy the vinyl or get the download at a reasonable rate on bandcamp.
