All posts for the month July, 2014

Carsick Cars is a band I really like. This is from a 2011 cassette.  This one also pops up on You can Listen, You can Talk.

Still upset about Be Your Own Pet calling it quits a few years ago? This might be the remedy you need.

Mecca Normal has a new album coming out.  They posted a video of Super Valu Logo on their facebook page.  And it’s super great.  And it’s allegedly on the new album, though the press kit for the new album doesn’t support that.  But while we solve that mystery, here is another song from the LP that I can embed.

I’ve seen Merchandise play live twice, once in a dingy club where they blew tourmates Milk Music off the stage and would’ve stolen the entire show if it weren’t for those pesky noiseniks in Destruction Unit, and again when I randomly stumbled into them playing around noontime in a Barcelona city park. As demonstrated in the video above, the band seem to spend their upcoming album splitting the difference between those two performances, one part sunshine and one part grey, as they follow their muse down a Cure-esque rabbit hole. After the End is out August 25th on 4AD.
I’ve played “Boiling Point” off The Soundcarriers’ new album Entropicalia on the last two radio shows, but this is the song that gets the most spins at home. It’s a bit long, so if you ever hear it on WRCT, it’s probably because I either ran out of other stuff to play or I really have to pee and need a track to kill time.

Sometimes I have to dig deep into my memory for a song of the day. Other times, one great artist covers another, and I get to hit copy and paste and call it a day. This is part of the upcoming reissue of The Unicorn’s seminal (for me, at least) Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone?, a pretty obvious cash-grab if there ever was one. But The Unicorns were doing this weirdo blog pop business before blogs even existed, so they’re as deserving of a payday as anybody

I watched a tv show last night, when I couldn’t sleep (despite being sick) because I drank tea to get through the radio show.  Anyhow, the highlight of the tv show?  They stole a baby jesus from a manger, put it on a makeshift “raft” and then promptly planned to use a toy bow and arrow (lit on fire of course) to light baby jesus and raft on fire.  Best idea ever.  Don’t do this at home kids.

What does this have to do with the Thermals? Nothing directly. Just seemed like a good fit.

Might as well retain the rain theme for the weekend.  One of my all time favorite songs.  And it’s a sufficiently goofy 80s style video.
