Melkbelly’s BATB (aka Bathroom at the Beach) is awesome. The 7″ was released on vinyl on July 31 by Chicago outfit Automatic Recordings. This straight up single, available on a limited edition run of vinyl, really rocks.

This is sharp edged noisy pop reminds me a lot of Speedy Ortiz which I coincidentally posted this morning. The short A-side Bathroom at the Beach is quick, catchy and loud. The B-side is a long track with the braggable title Piss Wizard. This song fluctuates from driving and noisy to slow and catchy.

This band does recall Th’ Faith Healers some. I think this music speaks for itself.

I don’t think we’ve played this. But I also want to call attention to how awesome Speedy Ortiz frontwoman Sadie Depuis is. So read this article before you watch the video. Maybe even go buy yourself a Gender is Over t-shirt. Ok, now you’re good.

Welcome to the third edition of the Interstellar Radio Shower Week in Review. Here in we pick the favorite song posted by the other (ie. Jim picks his favorite Matt song, and Matt his favorite Jim song) and we say why it’s our fav. Also, quick summaries of our other long posts for the week. Basically, herein we navel gaze.

Jim Picks a Matt Song

I could easily go with Minor Victories for the great video giving a sneak peak at their upcoming debut. But the audio peaks are so short. So let’s go with something you can listen to and enjoy. I also really like the intro to Jacuzzi Boys. And the song is good, but something about the exchange with the lady about their name that is very familiar. Anyhow, lots of good stuff again this week from Matt. I’m going to go with Butterscotch Cathedral. Because damn if that doesn’t work.

Matt Picks a Jim Song

Another week full of highlights from Jim. I found myself wishing the Nicole Kidman (not the Nicole Kidman, I assume) song was longer so I could let the synth tone gently massage my brain, but ultimately I’ll go full-on 90’s emo/indie and say my favorite post of the week was Silian Rail’s “Slint if they ever smiled” instrumental, followed very closely by the eternally affable Jad Fair and Jason Willett doing their thing.

Drunk Radio Shower – Chile Edition

One of our newer features is our International Radio Shower series. We will pick a different country each month and highlight some of the interesting music coming from that nation state. The mundane aspect of this will debut next Friday with a glimpse into the Greece music scene.

Last night we debuted one of our more obnoxious features. Similar to the International Radio Shower, we dove into music from Chile. And we did so while drinking extensively. And therefore opining absurdedly.

Click here to check out the 31 bands highlighted during last night’s Drunk Radio Shower.

7″ Highlight – The Ghost Ease’s “Quit Yer Job”

We must be on to something. We posted about The Ghost Ease’s excellent 7″ EP “Quit Yer Job” on Tuesday and the next day I got an e-mail from K Records saying they are distributing it. Well, hey, they have good taste. We must have it too. Check out our full blog post here. Or listen to part of it below.

LP Highlight – Min Diesel’s Mince

This weeks focus album is the new release from Scotland’s Min Diesel. This pure indie rock album is really great. You can read the full post by visiting the blog post or listen to the album below.

Sunday, July 26th Radio Show Playlist

Matt held down the fort. The show featured Web of Sunsets, The Homosexuals, and The Aislers Set. Check out the full playlist here.

New air waves? This makes me very excited. It’s got her trademark guitar style. That’s all you need really. This single is from her upcoming release Parting Glances due out September 18th via Western Vinyl. And it’s a nice tune to relax to while recovering from last night’s drunk radio blogging…

8:00pm In just a minute we’re going to roll into a bunch of psyche. But check out this awesome post-rock / math-rock band from Chile. Warm up to this comfortably shifty music.

8:08pm Oops let that go for two songs. The Holydrug Couple… Sacred Bones signees and maybe the most well known band from this scene Stateside. Might as well ease into things.

8:20pm oops we’re slow. just let that band play for a bit. On to the next one. Y’all motherfuckers like MBV, right?

8:30pm and now we go twee. just discovered this an hour before going live with the drunk blog. so there!

8:40pm ok matt brings you… La Hell Gang. BJM-esque rock ‘n roll muzak.

8:50pm Psychedelic Schafferson Jetplane… probably the first band from this scene I heard, and the sound I associate with it. Look up the video to this song, fits the mood perfectly.

9:00 And now we get pretty. so very pretty. reminds me a bit of a Chilean Emiliana Torrini.

9:10pm Let’s pick up the energy.

9:20pm ok we picked this one at random. umm, we’ll let you know what we think.

9:25pm oh that was a good break. Actually those guys seem like terrible people, please don’t give them any more attention than we already did. OK, back to the real tunes. Mi Andromeda toured with Astrobrite, which seems absolutely obvious when you listen to that.

9:35pm we will try another random one. we will so here is 5 minutes of some random dub-step from Chile.

9:40pm ok, let’s try fucking gothics at the beach. because that’s what we do.

9:45pm Watch Out!

9:55pm ok more good music. no more random stuff yet. Chicos de Nazca, featuring members of one of the bands we played already… who I forget… just take my word for it.

10:05pm The final pre-planned song of the night, which means we’ll be getting weird with it shortly. Bookending things another Sacred Bones band. Best accompanied by a bottle of Robitussin.

10:15pm Don’t call child protective services. The kids did picked this though. Seriously don’t call child protective services.

10:25pm this band is mixed in jim’s opinion. But he likes the opening track. He has opinions that no one listens to though so there is that.

10:35pm ok, random for the rest of the night. But we have hope and this looks good.

10:45pm Pontiacs were so good! wow! yay! awesome! and now for our next experiment. Mainly this dude looks like an old co-worker and friend.

10:51pm ok that was good in it’s way but totally ready for something hopefully better. everyone, arm your mind phasers.

10:54pm quick abandonment of that last one. Just ambient doesn’t fit drunk live blogging. But this is starting out really well.

11:04pm wow that was so good. can you match that nueva costa?

11:14pm we’ve been calling this the devil music all night. Doom but psychadelic? Are these tags legit?

11:21pm we thought that this album cover was very swirlies. but how is the music?

11:27pm this is for anyone who doesn’t like drunk radio shower blogging. los fuck you!

11:35pm that was really quite good. This looks like it has potential.

11:45pm gonna be hard to beat that. holy shit Desperfecto is soooooo good. And this is tagged as pop punk. Which is dangerous. Sorry Ryan. Anyhow, let’s find out.

11:55pm We keep eying this one. Could go either way. We all feel that let down is inevitable after Desperfecto, but who knows…

12:00am this one is fuckin medium fi. what the fuck is that? Note that we are playing at random.

12:05am so let’s try something different. sorry bandcamp, time to do some soundcloud.

12:10am omg i’m late! turns out laptops need power. even drunk ones.

Closing comments

I’m tired. We discovered some great shit. Some stuff I liked well enough but maybe won’t listen to much again. And some other stuff. No matter what. Music is something everyone can create and there is all kinds. What I like may not be what you like. But how great is it that we all find lovely tunes that fit our needs. Love music. Will never ever forget a certain split lp. – jim k

This first caught my attention because Min Diesel is a great band name. And the artwork reminded me a bit of something Will Oldham might have done at some point (in another life or something). And the album does not disappoint.

Min Diesel hails from Aberdeen, Scotland. Mince was released on May 11th on Cool Your Jets. I’m a little late becoming aware of this, but 9 copies of the lp are still available so let’s do this now and quickly. This isn’t Will Oldham (who I like). It’s indie rock, straight and simple. And it’s very good.

I feel like this falls somewhere between Pavement and Guided by Voices without sounding remotely like either of them. The opener War Band is a good rocker, but the second song Pagan Pageant is just great. It may be the stripped down parts of that song that recall Guided by Voices. And the alluring guitars that make me think pavement. The last 30 seconds of it gets very math rocky too.

I really do think this album is great. It has parts that remind me of some of my 90s favorite without actually sounding like those bands all that much. Trail of T-Shirts and Kirk Session make me think of Sebadoh. The guitar riff on T-shirts is just great. dB, however, is probably my favorite. It’s got some edge and some fire.
