Random Album of the Day

The Bonus Random Album of the Day is Buds from Ovlov. Ovlov is a Noise Pop/Rock band from Connecticut and I’m a fan.

Their guitars remind me a lot of Dinosaur Jr. A little less on this album than on AM but in general that still applies. They must be heavily influenced by them I’d think. Anyhow that sound works for me.

Some songs on this album are on the poppier end then I prefer like “Eat More” but overall I like it. So while this isn’t my favorite Ovlov album it remains excellent!

Rating: 9.6

Favorite Track(s): “Baby Shea” is solid. “The Wishing Well” has a good up and down thing going on. “Strokes” is great! And “Cheer Up, Chihiro!” has such a great opening riff. I love that plus I love how after the first verse it gets heavier. I really like “Feel the Pain”.

Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is We Have Fed You All A Thousand Years from Utah Phillips. This is a highly political album that is half spoken word and half pro-union folk songs.

This album is really fun. Utah Phillips has good jokes and such. And the songs can be inspiring or funny. Obviously you have to agree politically. And on labor I absolutely do. Fighting for the working class is worth it. Anyhow, lots of memories listening to Utah Phillips. Good stuff…

Rating: 9.5

Favorite Track(s): “Mr. Block” always sticks out as hilarious and apropos politically. “The Preacher and the Slave” is always fun. You will get pie in the sky when you die, that’s a lie! And who doesn’t love “Casey Jones – The Union Scab” song? And of course we all love “Bread and Roses”. “Joe Hill” is a classic. It has been covered so many times. OMG “Hallelujah, I’m a Bum!” is great. The story helps this one along for sure. And of course “Solidarity Forever”. That song always reminds me of a DC protest I was in where the cops pinned us in and then arrested all 500 of us. We stood there trapped and sang this song as we waited for them to make their move. We eventually won a lawsuit against them for that arrest. “There is Power in a Union” is a great anthem.

Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is the Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out 7″ single from The M’s. This is the second release from The M’s to make the Random Album of the Day. The M’s are considered Indie Rock, Neo-Psychedelia, and/or Indie Pop.

The album is good. I believe these are covers. But they are good and that’s what matters.

Rating: 9.2

Favorite Track(s): “Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out” is all there is and it is good. But I didn’t see much difference between Pt. 1 and Pt. 2.

Random Album of the Day

At this rate, two random albums per day may become the norm. Until I crash from my chronic illness. Anyhow, this selection is a compilation from Polyvinyl Records called Winston’s Essentials. I’m fairly positive that Winston is the office dog.

Polyvinyl is an Indie Rock label pretty much. I generally like their stuff. Compilations are tough though. One really bad song can ruin the mix. Fortunately there aren’t a lot of duds on this mix. It’s quite good. Winston has good taste!

Rating: 9.2

Favorite Track(s): Unshockingly the Of Montreal tune “Coquet Coquette” is excellent. Similarly, “Dust” from Love is All is good. “Sink / Let It Sway” from Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin isn’t great but it is solid. I haven’t listened to much Japandroids but “Younger Us” is a good song. I like the song from Aloha (“Waterwheel”). A good song from Asobi Seksu in “Celeste”. “Fear of Missing Out” from Love of Everything is really good. “Take My Hand” from Loney Dear is good. “Secrets” from Headlights is one of the better songs on the mix for sure. Saturday Looks Good To Me is a good band so no surprise that “Parking Lot Blues” is decent.

Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is the self-titled LP from Yona-Kit. This is an experimental noise rock band from Chicago dating back to the 1990s. I hadn’t discovered them back then but more recently. They are also considered to be in the Pigfuck genre which I’ve never heard of but that refers to “Sloppy, abrasive and feedback-laden riffing with vulgar and edgy lyricism, informed by Post-Hardcore’s aggression and Post-Punk’s rhythm section.” I guess it fits but what a weird genre name.

They are definitely an acquired taste. They are heavier and on the aggressive end of noise rock. That makes sense when you realize that noise rock is a pretty broad genre of music. Anyhow it’s a genre I love and there are still parts of the genre that I don’t love. But I do love this. So there…

Overall great use of repetition. Good heaviness without sounding metal (nothing wrong with metal – I just like when things are heavy like this). I even like the vocals – particularly on “Franken-Bitch”.

Rating: 9.3

Favorite Track(s): “Franken-Bitch” is great and seasonally appropriate! “Dancing Sumo Wrestlers” is a solid instrumental. I zoned out for a bit but “Skeleton King” is good. The repetitive riff in it is awesome. This album is solid all the way through “Slice of Life”

Random Album of the Day

Another bonus pick! Today’s bonus album is Ya from Khadja Nin. Khadja is an Afro-Soul singer from Burundi. The genre’s listed include Pop, East African Music, and African Music. Some of those are vague but I guess all genres are. But this is basically African Pop.

This is a situation where I want to like the music more than I do. Mainly because while I selectively like some Pop, I’m not a huge Pop fan. Still I think this is solid for what it is.

Rating: 7.5

Favorite Track(s): “Turasa” stood out to me. “Damu Ya Salaam” also pretty good. “Africa Obota” got my attention. I like how it evolves as a song. “Kembo” is decent too. “Shadow Man” is pretty anthemic.

Keep or Trash: Keep. Mainly because I’m not deleting my only album from Burundi. My copy is missing a song though and I’m not replacing it.

Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is Lullaby for Liquid Pig from Lisa Germano. This is considered Singer-Songwriter or Dream Pop.

This is not as poppy as I want it to be oddly. But it’s overall very good. It fits a specific contemplative mood quite well.

Rating: 8.3

Favorite Track(s): “Paper Doll” is melodic and lovely. “Candy” is good and catchy. “From a Shell” is lovely. “It’s Party Time” is sweet sounding. “All the Pretty Lies” continues the consistent sound on this album. I really liked “Into the Night”. I needed to close my eyes while I listened and it just fit. “…To Dream” is a nice close for this album!

Keep or Trash: Keep. It won’t get listened to a lot but it is really good for that thoughtful mood.

A bonus album today for Indigenous People’s Day! I rolled the dice and our bonus Random Album of the Day is Hysteresis from Dolenz.

Dolenz is a DJ from the UK. Their specialty is apparently Halftime which I’ve never heard of before but it’s an offshoot of Drum & Bass. It’s an odd album for me to have downloaded as it is not at all in my wheelhouse.

I’m torn. I think it’s good for what it is but it’s not my favorite style of music at all. So I may rate it well but I think I’m likely gonna delete it from my collection because it is not a style of music I pursue. And I’m trying to increase the ratio of things I want to hear in my collection. So I while I kind of liked it and appreciate it for what it is – I don’t really care to ever listen to it. But it’s good so if it’s a style you are into – check it out!

Rating: 7.5

Favorite Track(s): “Rap 1 ft. Toofless” is good. I really liked “BBoxyrama”.

Keep or Trash: Trash. Mainly because it’s not a style of music I care for that much.

Random Album of the Day

Yay for reaching the 150th post of the Random Album of the Day. Today’s pick is from Uruguay and it is – from Hombre Tortuga. And yes the title of the album is just a dash or a hyphen.

Hombre Tortuga is Electronic music. Not usually my jam but I downloaded it so must have liked it. I guess we’ll see as we listen here. This is a short record – basically a single.

This single has a very chill vibe. It features three songs that range from avant garde to ambient. Overall I like it though the last song wasn’t my favorite.

Rating: 8.0

Favorite Track(s): “Astros Y Vueltas Al Sol” is chill with samples. I think this would go well on my Christmas playlist for some reason. I think the higher pitch notes plays into that. Even though this song is basically ambient it works for me. “Arte Poética” also is perfect for ourchristmas list. It has a spoken word element though it is in Spanish so I know not what they say. This song has a jazz vibe to it.

Keep or Trash: Keep. Mainly because I like it on our Christmas list haha. It’s not Christmas music fwiw.

Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is Cats in the Cold from Mage Tears. This is Bedroom Pop / Indie Folk. Very low key music.

I first heard this via one of my Music Leagues. I liked it so I bought their music. I enjoyed it still but it’s definitely not for everyone. Super low key. I just like this lo-fi existence when I’m in the mood. It is melodic music and very chill for an appropriate day of rest.

Rating: 8.5

Favorite Track(s): “Cats in the old” is mellow but melodic. “Now the Rain Comes” was #35 on my top 50 rain songs list. After that the songs do kind of blur together and I stopped noticing distinct songs. But the album does exude a certain consistent atmosphere.

Keep or Trash: Keep.
