Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is a Daytrotter Session from Jenny O.. Daytrotter was a studio in the 2000s and 2010s that did live sessions with artists and then made them available for download for a cheap subscription.. But generally they aren’t available to stream now.

Rate Your Music lists Jenny O. as Indie Pop and Singer-Songwriter. I wouldn’t say those are wrong but I also feel she’s a bit Indie Rock/Folk on this album maybe. Anyhow it’s a good collection of songs. Two of them are particularly catchy. I would not say spectacular, but enjoyable. I’ve never listened to Jenny O. much but this gives me enough that I’m curious to listen to more.

Rating: 8.0

Favorite Track(s): Learned My Lessons or Lazy Jane

Keep or Trash: Keep. I like it.

As noted above the Daytrotter Sessions can’t be streamed to my knowledge but all of the tracks in this session are on this album. The tracks are Learned My Lessons, Get Lost, Lazy Jane, and Opposite Islands. For some reason Jane is missing the Y.

Today’s Random Album of the Day is Recuerdo Andino from Llajtasuyo. I can’t find any information about this recording online. No stream or anything. So I’ll do my best to relay what this is.

This is, at a minimum, influenced by traditional music from South America. The Andean reference suggests as much. When I googled Llajtasuyo I couldn’t find much except a reference to them performing at a School for the Americas Protest. This is where the USA trained troops who conducted human rights abuses in South America and Central America. I wonder if that is how I came into possession of this – through my activist roots.

I know next to nothing about traditional Andean music so I’ll just say that this is really good music. Well performed and quite entertaining. It’s not my usual fair of noise rock or twee pop. It is what it is though and it is quite interesting.

Favorite Track(s): Sariri or Nucallaqta or El Pitch. I could go on really. It’s all good.

Keep or Trash: Keep. It seems unique. I don’t know how much I’ll listen to it, but it seems worth keeping. It’s cool we have this in our collection of music.

I hate that I do not have a stream for you. But this may be who this is. This Youtube channel has several videos of a band performing traditional music that goes by this name and that sounds similar. And they tag their location as Atlanta which fits with a School of Americas Protest since that was located in Georgia. Also their Youtube shows the Peru flag which fits.

Today’s random album of the day is PostMap 00°08 Light of the Moon single from Randolph’s Leap. The PostMap releases are postcard releases. You basically get a postcard with a digital code on it. It’s a neat system. But how is the music?

This is indie pop / indie folk and it’s pretty decent overall. On the first note I thought it was going to get experimental but it didn’t go there. The first song is a version of “Light of the Moon” and both my wife and I liked it. But the second song “Zombie” was underwhelming. The third song gives a fuller sound on “Mutiny” which carries over to “Light of the Moon (band version)”. The full band sound helps a lot. My wife and I both enjoyed the full band version of “Light of the Moon”.

Overall I think it was mostly enjoyable except that second song which I just didn’t like much. I create playlists for most of my albums. I do occasionally delete a song from them and I may do that here with that second song.

Rating: 7.8

Favorite Track(s): Light of the Moon (Clumsy Knot Version)

Keep or Trash: Keep. Most of the single is good and it’s enjoyable.

Today’s Random Album of the Day is a Daytrotter Session from Places recorded on September 4, 2013. I thought that this would be The Places featuring Amy Annelle. It is not them. This is a sort of vocal driven folk pop band.

Honestly I feel like this is a folk pop boy band. That’s a weird descriptor but it seems apt. And that’s not a thing I like. Jen liked it some. It’s not really her wheelhouse either but she thought it was decent.

They are not without skill. They have singing talent and instrumental talent. So if a folk pop boy band sounds like your thing this may work for you.

Rating: 4.0

Favorite Track(s): Love Someone

Keep or Trash: Delete. Jen liked it a bit but we’re never going to listen to this.

I managed to find them on Spotify. Not the Daytrotter Session but this album has several of the songs from the Daytrotter Session.

The Random Album of the Day is the You Happy Puppet Single from 10,000 Maniacs.

I haven’t listened to this in forever. I do like 10,000 Maniacs. Unfortunately for some reason the single was missing a song but I managed to fix that without buying anything.

I love Natalie Merchant’s voice. Musically I think 10,000 Maniacs can vary a bit. Some songs have great melodies while others rely too much on Merchant to carry them in my opinion.

This particular single didn’t blow me away. It’s solidly good. Sometimes my mod can affect how I receive an album so keep that in mind. But these songs didn’t grab me as much as I wanted them to. Still I liked “Hello in There” quite a bit. Also, it’s really not that unusual for me to be most into the last song on a single. I’m weird in that way.

Rating: 8.0

Favorite Track(s): Hello In There

Keep or Trash: Keep. I like 10,000 Maniacs so I can’t see me getting rid of this.

I could not find the full single as a stream so here is the song You Happy Puppet:

Today’s random album of the day is Bird Sounds EP from TV Wonder. This is a unique sound I’d probably call experimental indie rock. Which looking at the tags on Bandcamp aligns with their description.

This is really interesting. It has almost competing rhythms at times but layered over catchy melodies. It sounds chaotic but isn’t chaotic at all. It is very entertaining and quite enjoyable. This is exceptionally well done and really well composed.

My wife was pointing out how it sometimes has this muted guitar underneath at times in a way that really works. It is mixed in really well.

Favorite Track(s): Bamboo Frame

Rating: 9.5

Keep or Trash: Keep. This is really good. They are related to the label Geertruida I think as a founder. They are in other bands that I will have to check out.

Today’s Random Album is The Truman Sho from Flashlight O. Flashlight O is Colin Alexander – an artist From Baltimore. And this album is basically indie folk meets slacker rock with some experimental-ness.

I had no idea I had this album. I must have found it in one of my scans of Bandcamp. But I really like it. The buried vocals are aesthetically perfect – though some songs would stand out more if the vocals did, We’ve got catchy little indie folk tunes with a random slacker rock song here and there. Instrumentally I really like how things are mixed. The percussions is great.

Overall I really enjoyed this. A nice little find that I already found at some point but then proceeded to forget about. I like that there is basically endless good music out there in the world. Keep it coming world…

Favorite Track(s): Wooden Flooring or Thanksgiving.

Keep or Trash: Keep. I quite liked this.

The Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is the Holes 7″ from Government Flu. They are a hardcore band from Poland that was active mostly during the 2010s.

I don’t have a lot of hardcore in my collection though I do like it. Most of the time I’m into the more artsy shit such as math rock or the more sentimental stuff such as twee pop. So I was a bit surprised to find not one but three 7″s and a full length album from Government Flu that I forgot I had.

I am no expert on hardcore, but this seems to be very solid. Very tight musicianship combined with hard hitting flows and obtuse vocals. It works well.

Rating: 8.5

Favorite Track(s): Shadows. I probably like the pace of this song the most. What can I say, I’m a slow moving chronic illness girl.

Keep or Trash: Keep. I may not listen to it much but it is good hardcore and worth keeping.

Today’s Random Album of the Day is Shake the Pounce from Gaze. This is twee pop, which is a genre I adore. At least I adore this album. Always have.

It’s basically light indie pop. Twee that is. Good catchy little ditties on this album. I could chill to this all day. I wish I knew more of the words to sing along though.

My wife and I discussed how we like the vocals. They are nice sounding but don’t come across as a traditional singing style. But they really work for me.

Trying to pinpoint why I love this so much. But head isn’t working well this morning due to 2.5 week migraine courtesy of Lyme disease. Which reminds me, sidetone: podcasts are all on delay or being skipper this week due to illness.

Rating: 9.5

Favorite Track(s): So Early To Tell, From the Inside, Tea or Coffee, Nine Lives to Rigel Five, Static, and especially In The Midst

Keep or Trash: Keep. I just love this album. In fact I realized I don’t have their other album so it’ll be purchased when the money is there.

Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is Crocus from The Ophelias. The Ophelias are definitely indie music – some indie folk, some indie pop, and some indie rock. Rate Your Music includes Chamber Pop which seems apt I suppose. They formed in 2015 and Crocus (2021) is their third full length album. They also have a newer album released last year so they remain active.

The violin really helps give their sound this consistent ambiance. So much so that the songs can blend together sometimes. This can be good or bad I suppose. But I think it all works overall. The Ophelias have a very pretty sound. They are sometimes catchy, sometimes solemn, and sometimes passionate. It all works for me on a certain level but also sometimes feels like background music. I guess I want it to be bolder somehow. But it is quite good.

Rating: 8.0

Favorite Track(s): Spirit Sent or Mastermind or Neil Young on High

Keep or Trash: Keep. It is very pretty and enjoyable.
