Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is I’m Going Away from The Fiery Furnaces. I think that the best genre description for them might be Progressive Pop. Progressie because of their creative music construction and Pop because of their approachable style.

Their music is so good. They do a sort of bent on indie pop with various musical structures and vocal harmonies. Songs tend to shift and meander in a way that is contradictory at times, but overall interesting to follow.

Rating: 9.6

Favorite Track(s): “I’m Going Away” is intense but excellent. “Drive to Dallas” has that sort of musical feel with an Indie Rock touch. “The End is Near” is lovely. The whole album picks up and down as needed. Very excellent! “Even in the Rain” is probably my favorite.

Keep or Trash: Keep.

Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is Vernon Manner from Philadelphia’s Webb Chapel. Rate Your Music says they are Art Rock which is fine but they feel more like Dream Pop meets Neo Psychedelia to me.

In any case I like them. This album is good though they have a cassette with the same name and totally different tracks which totally confused me at first. Anyhow, excellent album so it’s a keeper.

Rating: 9.6

Favorite Track(s): “Summer Again” is great. Great distorted guitars. great overall sound. “Heavy Metal” really works for me. Very Neo Psychedelia / Art Pop to me. “8 Ball” is hypnotic. My wife particularly liked “Without Love”. “End Trails” adequately rocks. I really liked “Fall All Around”.

Keep or Trash: Keep.

Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is from Xiu Xiu and titled Plays the Music of Twin Peaks. And it is exactly what it sounds like – an album of covers of Twin Peaks music. What an interesting concept album!

Xiu Xiu is an Experimental Rock or Art Pop band. I honestly haven’t listened to enough of their music, but I have this album and love the concept behind it. It helps that I’m a Twin Peaks fan.

This album is phenomenal. It takes the music of Twin peaks which is weird and interesting and elevates it as music to me. Most sings hit really well and really makes me like the music from Twin Peaks more than I actually do.

It is a long album for what it’s worth. As much as I love the album, I could see shortening a couple of songs might have worked out well.

Rating: 9.7

Favorite Track(s): “Laura Palmer’s Theme” is so quintessential Twin Peaks. “Into the Night” is even creepier than in the show. So good. “Audrey’s Dance” is so good. I swear this album gets better with every song. “Packard’s Vibration” is just awesome. Really well done. They did a great job with “Blue Frank / Pink Room”. “Falling” is again quintessential Twin Peaks and it’s done well here.

Keep or Trash: Keep.

Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is another Daytrotter Session. This one is from My Brightest Diamond. Art Pop seems the most appropriate genre.

I liked this. It has a touch of weird at times but is overall beautiful. Her talent is obvious and her orchestration of her songs is anything but stale while still being somewhat minimalist.

Rating: 9.2

Favorite Track(s): “From the Top of the World” is beautiful yet haunting. Very good. “Apples” is good in a weird way and also pretty.

Keep or Trash: Keep. I’m intrigued by this one.

I didn’t find the Daytrotter Session. I found one from 2007, but this one is from 2008. Anyhow, the songs are on this album:

Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is the Daytrotter Session from Zoos of Berlin. They are classified as Indie Rock / Art Pop and the Art Pop is especially apt.

It wasn’t the sound I wanted to start my day with. I don’t really believe most music is bad but some of it isn’t for me. And this isn’t for me. I guess it is what it is. I sometimes downloaded Daytrotter Sessions guessing at what I might like. And sometimes that worked and sometimes it didn’t. Something about books and covers I guess. Jen thought it was ok. Listen below and make up your own mind…

Rating: 5.0

Favorite Track(s): “Century Rail” has potential.

Keep or Trash: Trash.

You can find the Daytrotter Session here. This is the album from the year before the Daytrotter Session:
