Random Album of the Day

Today’s first Random Album of the Day is a compilation of tribute songs to Bjork called Hush. I’ve always liked this album and it is very apt as we just did a Band Jam league round with Icelandic music and of course Bjork was ever-present…

Why do so many compilations have the artist information listed weird? This is another one where I have to manually fix it. But it’s a great album. Lots of great musicians. I would have thought that covering Bjork would be hard with her uniqueness – but her songs clearly hold up with a diversity of styles and sounds. Not everyone pulled it off but none of the songs are bad.

For whatever reason several of these songs are on our Christmas list. They just have the right treble I guess for Christmas-time.

Favorite Track(s): “It’s Oh So Quiet” from Noise for Pretend is well done! “Hyper-Ballad” is excellently done! “The Hunter” is another impressive cover. “You’ve been Flirting Again” from Corrina Rapp is great. “Human Behavior” from the Decemberists is so Decemberists meaning it’s good. “Unravel” is well done by Bobby Birdman. “In The Musicals” is also excellent.

Keep or Trash: Keep. A worthwhile compilation.

Random Album of the Day

The Random Album of the Day is The Eye from K.U.K.L.. This is a 1980s Icelandic punk or perhaps more post-punk band featuring Bjork. And her presence is obvious on this record. And the sound should feel overall familiar since 4 of 5 members are also in the Sugarcubes. So there is a lot of familiarity in fact.

This is a good post-punk record. It has an experimental edge to it which really works for me. This is almost more experimental rock really. Which is not surprising given those involved. It is good to know these folks were making good and weird music before the Sugarcubes.

Favorite Track(s): “Let Us Get Rid of the Bomb” because we should get rid of all the bombs honestly. “Blackeye” for good use of the flute followed by a good haunting tone, “Assassin” for its New Wave sounds, “Spire” is just a good tune, “Dismembered” has a good tilting thing going on. Honestly I would have expected less good tracks but this is a good record.

Keep or Trash: Keep.

Here’s one I can’t play on the radio show. This is off the free album Death Grips dropped out of nowhere about a month ago, which is apparently part of an even bigger project. If those female vocals sound familiar, it’s probably because they chopped up a ton of Bjork samples and put them in every single track on the LP.
