Today’s random album of the day is Never Trust a Baby from Vulvette. Vulvette is a country singer from Missouri. I struggled to find the album online. It’s less modern country and more folk country so that’s good. The sound quality on the album is not good though. And I think this particular album would benefit from a better recording quality.

It is a good album I think. Some raw folk country mixed with different harmonies. It has a very bare, almost barren, sound. Acoustic guitar and vocals with vocal harmonizing here and there. Then there is some random electric guitar sounds on Everything Gets Broken and Lonesome Cowboy which I liked. My vegan ass even liked the Steak Dinner on a Saturday Night song. It was very old timey country. I’d rate the album higher probably with better sound although the low quality recording does fit the atmosphere of the music.

Favorite Track: Everything Gets Broken or Song of the Esplanade

Keep or Trash: Keep I think. I like it enough.

I couldn’t find this album so here is another one from Vulvette which I have not listened to so it has not influenced my thoughts above. OK, after writing that I took a quick gander and it sounds very different. It is a totally different stage of their music and I like it less even if the sound quality is there this time. I’m just not that into country.

Today’s Random Album of the Day is Sea of Tears from Eilen Jewell. I like this album so I was happy to see it come up. It’s technically alt-country which is good because I don’t like country for the most part. As my wife said, it’s in that zone of the Cowboy Junkies, somewhere where rock meets country. Sometimes a rockabilly feel. And it really works.

Eilen has a very sultry voice which gives it almost a tinge of a jazz feel with the drumming style. Or club music. We should be having a nice cocktail and enjoying this at the club. The album has a very chill vibe. The lyrics are darker than you expect at times. Or seem to be as best as I can follow. I don’t give this album enough listens so I’m very pleased it came up on the randomizer!

Favorite Track: Codeine Arms

Keep or Trash: This is a keeper album. We also have it on vinyl so very happy to have this around.

Today’s random album is another Daytrotter Session. This one is with Nicole Atkins. And I liked this so much better than yesterday’s random Daytrotter Session. The first song starts out like a Doors song that is a bit country. It’s a lot rock ‘n roll but they’re in Nashville and I feel that influence. I feel they have a very unique sound. Once again I feel like if I saw Nicole Atkins in a bar I’d be blown away. But listening abstractly I just like it. Very solid.

Once again the Daytrotter Session is not available to stream. But this album is where most of the tracks come from.

Today’s random album is a Daytrotter Session with The Devil’s Horns Kill the Matador. This was a random download from Daytrotter way back when. I’ve been gradually going through and listening to these random downloads anyhow because I’m deleting them if I don’t love them. Just cleaning up my music collection.

In this case, well, I will be deleting this from my collection. I feel like they’d be fun to see live, but I don’t have the urge to listen to this outside of that context. It’s a bit weird which I typically like weird. So I do like bits of it. I’s a bit of a shame I don’t like them more, but then it is ok. And maybe part of me wants to not love them because I want to delete content. It is weird how our subjective desires can influence our tastes.

I don’t see much of their stuff online and the Daytrotter sessions can be hard to find these days. But here is an EP of theirs. This has two of the songs from the Daytrotter Session.

Today’s random album of the day is the Ghost Boobs EP from Gravy Train!!!! I could not find the EP online so I’ve included the music video for the song Ghost Boobs which is obviously on the EP. I love this song and EP. It’s so fun! And I love Gravy Train!!!!’s unapologetically queer aesthetic. Their music is dancy with a punk touch. Extra points for each exclamation point in their name too!

Today’s random album is a Daytrotter session with T. Hardy Morris. I don’t see it online so I just shared a random album of his below. His music is good but I didn’t find it appealing enough to want to buy more. And I’m trying to pare down my collection so I actually removed it after I listened. It’s solid rock ‘n roll though and many people would find his music appealing. I enjoy it too. I just don’t need it.

So we’re currently doing a music league using the Band Jam App and our theme for this round is Song for a Rainy Day. I found so many songs about rain when looking into this, so I decided randomly to do a top 50 list. So listen below, or click below the fold for the list…

The tentative plan is to do a different top list every couple of months. It may be a theme list like this one. Or it may be, for example, top songs from a particular band. Or maybe even something different.

Today’s album of the day is a 7″ single from The Vaccines featuring their songs Tiger Blood and Tuck and Roll. This is the only Vaccines in my collection. It’s actually pretty good Indie Rock. It’s not top tier (from my subjective view), but it’s solid. Now I couldn’t find a streaming version but I found a collection of their B-Sides that includes both tracks.

Sorry for no random album yesterday. I was busy getting the podcast posted. Today’s random album is Wars from xbxrx. This has a bit of a punk flavor, perhaps experimental sound. It uses lots of sudden stops, distorted guitars, and lots of vocal echo. I’m not always a fan of vocal echo but it works well here. This, like zzzz’s album, has a bit of a chaos feel which I love. Overall, I am so pleased these albums are coming up as the random albums of the day. I have not listened to them in some time and I forget how much I like them!
