Random Album of the Day

The Random Album of the Day is The Eye from K.U.K.L.. This is a 1980s Icelandic punk or perhaps more post-punk band featuring Bjork. And her presence is obvious on this record. And the sound should feel overall familiar since 4 of 5 members are also in the Sugarcubes. So there is a lot of familiarity in fact.

This is a good post-punk record. It has an experimental edge to it which really works for me. This is almost more experimental rock really. Which is not surprising given those involved. It is good to know these folks were making good and weird music before the Sugarcubes.

Rating: 9.5

Favorite Track(s): “Let Us Get Rid of the Bomb” because we should get rid of all the bombs honestly. “Blackeye” for good use of the flute followed by a good haunting tone, “Assassin” for its New Wave sounds, “Spire” is just a good tune, “Dismembered” has a good tilting thing going on. Honestly I would have expected less good tracks but this is a good record.

Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is the Daytrotter Session from Zoos of Berlin. They are classified as Indie Rock / Art Pop and the Art Pop is especially apt.

It wasn’t the sound I wanted to start my day with. I don’t really believe most music is bad but some of it isn’t for me. And this isn’t for me. I guess it is what it is. I sometimes downloaded Daytrotter Sessions guessing at what I might like. And sometimes that worked and sometimes it didn’t. Something about books and covers I guess. Jen thought it was ok. Listen below and make up your own mind…

Rating: 5.0

Favorite Track(s): “Century Rail” has potential.

Keep or Trash: Trash.

You can find the Daytrotter Session here. This is the album from the year before the Daytrotter Session:

Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is Korea Girl‘s self-titled album. This is straight up 1990s Indie Rock. And I’m a fan. Among other things, this record is very good to sing along to which is a plus.

Now I should note that the version I have is extended with bonus tracks. Those bonus tracks are also on Spotify so you can listen to them. I probably will mention some of them below.

Rating: 9.5

Favorite Track(s): “B-Side” is an homage to b-sides which I respect and I love the melody and like to sing along. “Reunion” also gets to me for some reason but it’s very catchy. “Atomic Skies” I like this jingle. “Prozac” just because it’s catchy. “Jessie’s Girl” is a great cover.

Keep or Trash: Keep.

Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is 7 From the Village from Fields. They are an Indie Rock band from the oughts and this is a compilation album of their material. This is an album I forgot I had. I had bought this back in 2008. Kind of a deep cut compared to some of the recent random albums. Rate Your Music also classifies Fields as Dream Pop and Shoegaze but I don’t see that with this album.

I tend to type as I listen. They start out with an almost psych pop sound. Very 1960s. But squarely Indie Rock too. Definitely not Dream Pop or Shoegaze to me. But then it turns a bit on “Sisters” and definitely sounds very indie rocky even more so – perhaps a bit indie pop. Then I feel the dream pop a bit on “Roll Down the Hill”. But really it sounds more 80s pop but not necessarily in a way that I like.

Rating: 7.0

Favorite Track(s): “Song for the fields” is interesting. It has a sort of 1960s psych rock sound. “Brittlesticks” is a catchy tune.

Keep or Trash: Trash. I kind of liked them but I don’t see me listening to them much if at all. I’m also really focused on getting rid of things I won’t listen to.

I couldn’t find this compilation streaming but I found their only full length album so here is that…

Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is The Best of Van Morrison. Van Morrison needs no introduction. Overall this album is full of great songs of course. But as an album I’d say it doesn’t flow like Astral Weeks does. But obviously a good album.

Rating: 9.6

Favorite Track(s): “Bright Side of the Road”, “Moondance” – ok it’s a greatest hits album. I think I won’t list the good songs.

Keep or Trash: Keep. Duh.

I couldn’t find a stream of this exact Best of album, so sharing this one for listens…

Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is a Demo from Thorn and Shout. They self tagged their music as folk or chamber folk. It is definitely folk and I see where they get the chamber folk designation from with the strings and arrangement in there.

I found the first song a bit boring to be honest. Sound quality isn’t great on the Demo – as is often the case. It picks up when the lady sings. Just adds a strong element and her voice is powerful. Overall I would call it solid enough folk but I find the arrangements not very vibrant. My wife seemed to feel similarly.

Rating: 7.0

Favorite Track(s): “All Things Magical” is a highlight with the woman singing. Her voice is great. “Name & Noise” is solid.

Keep or Trash: Trash. I don’t see myself listening to this Demo much. I have another album from them so I’ll check that out and decide if it’s worth keeping. If the sound quality is better that might help.

Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is The Reminder from Feist. Feist is listed as Art Pop or Indie Pop but very well known. Honestly they are kinda more straight up pop with an artsy edge to me.

Overall I’d say this album is good art pop or whatever you wanna call it. It’s enjoyable. Not really background music to me. I think it works best with a quiet focus. This album would be good for a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Rating: 8.8

Favorite Track(s): “I Feel it All” is a pop song I’ve always loved. “My Moon My Man” has a nice melody. “The Park” is very heartfelt. “Sea Lion Woman” worked for me. “The Limit To Your Love” is a nice pop song. “1234” is nice and upbeat.

Keep or Trash: Keep. I have a soft spot for this album.

Random Album of the Day

Today’s Random Album of the Day is a 7″ single from Egg Hunt. This band features Ian Mckaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi, etc…) and Jeff Nelson (Minor Threat and many other bands). And it’s a very solid single as you might expect. My wife also liked it a lot.

Rating: 9.5

Favorite Track(s): “Me and You” is primarily instrumental and as my wife says features a great baseline. “We All Fall Down” is very Fugazi-esque.

Keep or Trash: Keep. duh.

Random Album of the Day

The Random Album of the Day is No Drum and Bass in the Jazz Room from Clever Girl. They are a UK-based Math Rock band. Their music is mostly instrumental.

I liked this. I do wish it had some lyrical component. My wife also wanted a lyrical component and thought the songs blended together some. I agree with that. But it’s very good.

Rating: 9.7

Favorite Track(s): “Elm” for the doo wop wop, “oh my god I love you please don’t leave me” for the horns. Really I liked all 4 songs. Probably would like it more with lyrics.

Keep or Trash: Keep.
